NOLA TOOK THE turn to the Wild Springs Ranch and tried to forget that she’d just left Wyatt to have to deal with the news that his brother’s car would be retrieved.

Of course, she couldn’t actually forget that, especially erase that look on his face from her mind, but he’d insisted that she come ahead to her brunch with Lily. Nola had finally agreed only because she knew that Wyatt needed some time to work this through. Work it through alone. That was the way he handled things. The way she had to let him handle things, though it’d been darn hard to walk away from him.

Later, she could go to him and try to pick up the pieces.

For now, though, he had to do some shattering and picking up pieces here. It was possible that Lily would easily handle what Nola had to tell her about Griff and Carlene. After all, all of that had happened years ago. Years in which Lily had gotten married, had a daughter, bought the Wild Springs Ranch and gotten a divorce. Maybe it wouldn’t matter to her sister that Griff’s accident might not have been an accident after all.

Yes, and maybe pigs would fly, too.

No matter how much time had passed, there’d be no easily handling of the news. News that would stir up so many memories that her sister almost certainly wouldn’t want stirred.

With that dismal thought hanging over her, Nola parked in the driveway and made her way to the house. The Wild Springs Ranch wasn’t as big as Wyatt’s—few were in the area—but it was nearly a hundred acres of prime pastures dotted with small ponds and three barns.

Where Wyatt had gone the route of supplying volumes of horses to his buyers, Lily had chosen to provide the highest-quality breed stock for selective buyers—aka people with money to burn who wanted a horse with championship bloodlines.

Along with her ranch manager, Jonas, they’d built an impressive reputation that clearly translated to profits since everything on the grounds looked well-kept. Loved, even. The reputation, though, also translated to her sister working long hours while also managing the role as a single parent. That had been especially hard when Hayden had been younger, but at least now her niece didn’t require babysitters and such.

Nola went up the steps of the three-story Victorian that Lily had restored from top to bottom. It was big and sprawling but still felt like a well-loved, well-lived-in home. Probably because Hayden’s bike, skateboard and some baseball equipment were on the porch. Hayden clearly had a lot of interests, but judging from her recent emails with the girl, photography was her current passion. Hayden had gone back to the cemetery twice to get more pictures for Nola’s research.

The research Nola hoped that Lily could fill in for her after she heard the bad news about Carlene, of course.

As usual, the door was unlocked, but Nola gave a quick knock before she went in and called out, “It’s me.
